In addition to the episodic nature of this series, th other reason why I think we might not see Ash catch Pokemon is the fact that there's no indication of a new team member in any of the info we have now. Not in the opening, episode previews, posters, etc. Its all just Pikachu, Scorbunny, Yamper, and Mr. Mime. That is very unusual for the anime as we would definitely know what Ash's first capture would be by now
