It's the mechanic where I think the rubber most visibly met the road with ORAS. It does most of what it's supposed to do- following Latio/Latias into the sky to bookend the opening and giving a touch of vertical to a formerly 2D region, and putting a lot of Hoenn's empty ocean space to use, but the mirage islands were micro islands and only Landorous and Giratina get unique buildups. It was the other really cool thing they had time for along with Secret Bases, but "good enough" in execution.
Still way up there on the list of "Why the hell not?" features, for sure.
