Five weaknesses, rare powerful moves, average stats, only a few competitive pokemon

The only good thing about them is that they can restore their hp, which is useless if you consider they are easily killed before doing that

Kinda unfair for a starter type

Pure steel is definitely better than pure grass, but steel/grass is a nice combo.
A pure steel defensive ferrothorn wouldn't be as successful as the original, although still a good mon.

GF's balancing isn't out of a desire to make the types balanced, but out of a twisted RPG logic for elemental interactions.

If you look back at FF1/DQ and similar early RPGs that influenced Pokemon, Ice, Poison and Earth were types. Poison was split into Grass/Poison/Bug, Ice was split into Water/Ice while Earth was split into Rock/Ground. Doubling the types forced them to make up interactions like Rock being weak to Ground and Water resisting Ice but not visa versa.

They should absolutely make fairy weak to grass and make grass resist or even immune to fairy. It would make perfect sense too because fairies depend on the power of the forest and would never dare to hurt plant life.
Also removing the poison weakness from grass would be nice, I mean they removed it from bug in gen II. Why not do the same. Poison is already an excellent defensive typing. Maybe give it a SE hit on another typing like normal or water.

Grass is intended to be a "common" type like Water and Normal. It's extremely prevalent and easy to come across, so a lot of them will inevitably be fairly standard and not as wild or interesting as others. Of course a type that is often found in early routes will be on the lower end in terms of stats on average.

The type in a vacuum isn't the most desirable type (though it's no Ice type in that sense either), but they have plenty going on though so I'm not sure what you're getting at. They have access and immunity to common status inducing moves and Leech Seed, tons of utility moves like Aromatherapy and while Grass isn't the best attacking type, it's got use in its effectiveness against Water and Ground.

Grass is a support type, and it’s one of the best there is. Now stfu because they’re are types that with issues that are more pressing than grass.

Grass is one of the most well done type flavorwise and balancewise. It gets almost exclusive moves like the Powders and Leech Seed. Weather has a big effect on it, both Sun and Rain, doubling speed in the Sun while gaining access to Solar Beam, while at the same time losing fire weakness in the Rain. It has some weaknesses, but it also has some incredible resists in Water, Ground, and Electric. Very few of the attacks are just straight up vanilla either, with draining moves, grass knot, solar beam, etc.

My point is nobody complains rock type is underpowered because its carried solely by one omnipresent rock type that has been OU for 6 generations straight.

Well, your strawman isn't even wrong. A type that can spam button is objectively better than a type that can't spam button. You can always use the poor argument "b-b-but you can use bad types if you're good at the game!" but someone who is good at the game will perform better with types that aren't bad. And they do, judging by usage stats. No amount of "git gud" will make grass a better type

It's not shit because of any of its inherent qualities but because the only old great Grass type that survived was Ferrothorn, and the other potentially great ones, like Celebi, Grassy Surge Rillaboom and maybe Venusaur, are locked behind events at the moment. The remaining grass types are shit not because of their type but because of their stats and/or movepool. Eldegoss failed at becoming a Tangrowth replacement because it has no moves, not because pure Grass was somehow good then and irremediable now.

Grass isn't a weak type, yes it's a bad offensive type but compensate that with some of the best status move the game has. Yes they have a lot of weakness, but also 4 resistances, 3 of them being really uncommon resistances: one of the only two type resisting ground one of the best offensive typing in the game also one of the few types to resist water and electric.

Grass isn't a good at everything type like water is, but it's really hard to replace a grass type because it's one of the most unique type in the game and for me the best designed one.
