>>41728521The Pokeflute opens up several options for progression, although the only immediate uses for the item itself is going down a short route or a long route. Story progress wise it lets you complete Saffron. It also allows access to Fuchsia, and therefore Gen 1's surf, which again gives you two options for routing, alongside a completely extra dungeon. However, a lot of what I mentioned isn't optional, only the order of it. I'll list out the truly optional stuff the Pokeflute gives you, then the stuff surf does in BW.
Pokeflute
>Two routes (and a dungeon if you want to go through seafoam>Power Plant>I guess some extra items and one trainerBW Surf
>Two whole routes>Part of Wellspring Cave>Mistralton Cave, which in turn triggers the rest of the musketeers>Part of Pinwheel forest>Various optional areas on routes. If you want, I can go into Gen 1's other optional main content, no postgame or side stuff
>Digget's Tunnel if you don't want Flash>The extra rival battle near the start of the gameAs opposed to Unova's
>Lostlorn ForestAnd while Gen 1 gives you some options to skip some things (although I dunno why you'd want to skip Surge unless you're doing some gimmick run) Unova at least has the early Desert Resort.
What is your problem with me separating optional content from roadblocks, anyway?
