Gen 3 sprites look the most like "Pokemon"

1-2 look so dated compared to everything after
4-5 look like rehashes/updates
6-8 I'd rather not talk about

You are correct for the most part, gen 3 has the best sprites. There are a few exceptions were gen 4 or 5 look better but mostly gen 3 is best.

Or the kanto pokemon unobtainable in rse. I made a rom hack adding them all into the maps and they look horribly out of place.

Lugia and ho-oh look absolutely based in gen 3 though.

This is the same for all pokemon, they have this weird muted color in the 3D games for some reason. Artistic decision I guess but it looks like shit.

Gen 2 and 3 look best. Gen 3 (frlg) gyarados looked amazing.
I loved the "secret" gen 3 sprites for gen 1 and 2 mons that where different from fire red, that you only got to see if you tranferred em to rse.

Plese look up pidgeot's emerald enterance animation. 10/10.

Literally only because of "muh sugimori colors."
It's nowhere near as noticeable on Pokemon from Gen 6 onward because they're inherently more colorful in the art for the most part.

Hoennmons look good in gen 3, strange colors aside (like roselia or salamence).
The Johtomons and Kantomons not available in RSE look weird as hell, though.
And it's not until FRLG that the Kantomons (and Teddiursa for some reason) start to look really good.

Gen 3 has a bunch of botched sprites like Feraligatr having a spine disease and Banette looking like straight up trash. I think Gen 4 has the best sprites out of the 2D era. I still can't unsee all the moving pixelated messes that the Gen 5 sprites were.

A lot of monsters were dipped in bleach during the transition from sprites to 3D. I can't even figure out why they ended up that way, I assume it has something to do with how the 3DS doesn't handle darkness well in 3D mode but even then it shouldn't really be a big deal.
