This video was a hack based on that theory, the original version just has the shadow triad showing up and battling the 3 of them to explain why they weren't there with the other gym leaders during the castle raid.

I know that, just wanted to post that video. In all seriousness, I guess it's just BW/2s obsession with the number 3. Triple battles, 3 legendary dragons, three gymleaders in the first city, three teleporting ninja bodyguards, 3 kids starting an adventure together, etc.
