I think an important role in the past gens that has been missing from this one is the ability to pivot between offence and defense. Rotom is exclusively the only 'viable' bulky pivot, so teams have to rely on walls and more defensive-oriented tanks like ferrothorn, which are bait for setup sweepers.
Switching is really punishable, and while it should be, it shouldn't be to this extent, where it's better in a lot of/ most cases to sack for a free switch into something like G-Darm, anything that can setup into the current mon, etc.
This is my opinion, but I like the longer game of dismantling the opponent's defensive core/ neutralizing threats before setting up a sweep, compared to what we have now.
It's also possible that with the smaller meta that there is just in general not enough checks for bulky mons, which could also explain why setup/ sweeping is much more prevalent, a lot earlier into the game than it typically would be in other gens.
