>>41751849>>41751880One of the big things is it has some of the most drastic changes in movement (within a single track) of any of the pokemon games. The under track was the perfect example of this - first movement is built on a heavy bass track and it switches hard, no transition, into this glittery, high piano melody with a couple notes that sound out of key - and then the bass comes back in underneath it, you get a brief drum roll, and the core of the track hits, a mid range, minor organ melody that's the closest thing this gets to a standard pokemon track (it's reminiscent of rocket tracks from early games, in fact) and THEN the organ and the piano have a fucking fight with one another before a minute's passed in the piece. This is all musically interesting on its own, but more importantly it perfectly lines up with the themes of the under itself:
the opening bass riff tells you this is a bad place, where bad people come to do bad things
the piano tries to convince you of the surface level glitz of the neon, of venus' studio, and so on - the conspicuous consumption of the underclass - and the jarring notes remind you that this is all wrong
the organ is you, it's wes, it's played in a range between the bass and the ultrahigh piano that a human could reasonably hum, reflecting at the same time wes' heroic role in the game's plot and the fact that his criminal background means that by entering the under, he is amongst his people, it's what makes the sheer confidence of the organ melody so goddamn compelling
and then of course, the piano rebuts the organ with its aggressive, high chords, venus shouting her retort
god it's such a fucking good piece of music
