swsh is the unofficial decline of future pokemon game quality, some say it has started with x and y, but in my opinion swish is the biggest catalyst, and with the dex and megas removed it will lead to a silppery slope of more stuff getting removed and one time temporary gimmicks.

I haven't played the games, but can anyone who has tell me: Does it feel like an adventure? Almost all the games, especially Hoenn in my mind, feel like an RPG in which you start out in a small and safe village and everything around you is weak, and you eventually explore the world and move up to the big leagues. The flow of the game is fairly linear, with hints of either the next area to visit once you unlock the means of doing so (things like getting certain HMs or items to traverse obstacles) or places where the routes will eventually double back and you realize "Oh, this is where that comes out" (thinking of Route 46 in Johto).

From what I've seen of SwSh it feels maybe too...inhabited? Which is ironic since it contains a Wild Area, but like, it feels as though you're just being shepherded from place to place and it's less an exploration than a bar-crawl between gyms. Am I way off point?

but everything else you mentioned is nonexistant. It feels like routes are there just for a bit of padding in between cities, essentially they aren't really memorable and also really really short. It feels like they put all their effort into the arena and even that is pretty bad

I haven't bought or played the games, or even watched gameplay videos for that matter, so I don't have a complete opinion on them yet. I am planning to get a single copy of Sword though because despite the glaring flaws like pokemon being cut from the game and attacks being cut, I still think I would enjoy the games. I only use new gen mons for my first playthrough of a gen and there are plenty of mons still in the game that I've never used before if/when I replay it. The limited post game isn't much of an issue for me either because the only post-game stuff I can remember doing since gen 6 is breeding for competitive mons even though I don't play competitive, shiny hunting which is still an option, and finishing the dex which I can still finish the in-game dex and if I decide to get Home services I'll still be able to maintain my living dex.

SwSh are still good games. However, the series has been on a decline since the 3DS, and SwSh reflect a continued trend downward rather than an improvement.

Also, Dexit could potentially be the best thing to happen to the series as the fandom's perception of the series has become radically more negative. When the 3DS games were coming out, the fandom would drown out any complaints until after the honeymoon period was over

Customization options for both males and females is lackluster. I know the player character is like 10, so our options are limited to what you'd find in the kids section of your local Walmart, but what we got is just disappointing. Two styles of dress, the same ugly skirt with a slightly altered color pallette, boys have to carry a coffin everywhere on their backs, no options to change eye shape, or wear jewlery/necklaces/scarves, no eyeshadow or baggy eyes, it's all just underwhelming. There also should've been more hairstyles than what we were given in the game. Don't even get me started on the fact that we can't even wear our own style of uniform after becoming the champion or when we're riding the damn room bike.

This is why I stopped playing Pokemon, I just couldn't justify getting a 3DS for XY when I had a perfectly good DSi. The jump from Gameboy to Gameboy Advance to DS were all large enough bumps that it deserved a new system, but DS to 3DS? No thanks.

by what criteria do you define "good game" and how exactly do sword and shield fulfill those criteria?
your take on dexit is actually kind of interesting though and I think I agree. the average pokemon fan is basically willing to let tpc get away with murder but dexit was a bridge too far, which is interesting

What was good about the story to you? I can't disagree with a statement like "I enjoyed" but this is a thread about disagreeing so you know. I found the core plot conflict to be a rather shallow caricature of climate alarmism - which I'm not all that partial to myself, by the way, but it's not particularly strong storytelling. It was also a rehash in some ways of gen 6's plot which isn't terrible in a vacuum but neither of them contain a great deal of depth.

I define a "good game" by how much I enjoyed them. I recognize that objectively they are like a 4-5/10, but the core mechanics of Pokémon are so enjoyable to me that I think it would be hard for GF to make a Pokémon game that I actively disliked. I have gotten a lot more enjoyment out of these games than I have from many other games that I recognize to be fundamentally better.

I recognize that the plot, graphics, animation, level design, etc. are all pretty shit even by Pokemon standards, but I still had a good amount of fun with them, and I expect that most Pokémon fans would as well
