The fact Johto and Kanto were connected blew my mind as a kid. It felt like a whole new world, so much adventuring to do.

That being said, the level distribution and the pokemon availability is still a bummer. Combine that with the fact Johto mons had pretty terrible movesets, it's hard to go back and enjoy G/S/C

I started playing around gen 3, and since you couldn't buy gen 2 games retail anymore gen 2 was always this mysterious thing i'll never get to play. Especially since i didn't have a gamecube. Then HGSS came along, this was around the time i was buying pokeworld magazine, which i assume is just a UK equivalent of whatever the rest of the world had. I was following all of the releases. I got Soul Silver shortly after release and played it for 2 days straight, having already beaten the league the next day. The preorders came with a statuette of the box legend, but they were out of lugias so i got the ho-oh.

God, sorry for blogposting, i only wanted to write the first sentence but damn. I love johto so much, favourite season of the anime too. Call them buzzwords or whatever, but HGSS were so comfy and full of soul.

fucking based. I felt the exact same way, thought I was the only one that thought gen 2 was some exclusive thing I couldn't get. one day I went to a yard sale with my dad and he gave $10, there was a copy of gold and I desperately wanted it but my dad wouldn't let me (a good call as all I had was an old original game boy) so when I went home disappointed I went to youtube to find videos of gold. Then I saw that in japan the remakes were out. I waited months for it to come out and when it did I was instantly hooked. God so many good memories with that game, nothing even comes close. I remember me and my cousin would spend whole days just playing the games together.

Crystal was the comfiest thing to play as a kid. It had such a different tone from the anime, which I had already grown accustomed to. It didn't treat me like a baby; it was obviously a kids game but was still challenging and wasn't afraid to throw me into danger. Even though it was frustrating to figure out how to progress sometimes, it was also extremely rewarding. Not to mention the earliest gens weren't infected with a weird power creep. All the creatures and the setting just feel so grounded and genuine.

I still like Johto but I wish HGSS had let you use the rest of the Kanto and Johto pokemon that got pre-evolutions/evolutions in Gen 3 & 4 along with having all the Johto pokemon accessible before Post Game or earlier like Houndour, Slugma, Murkrow, Misdreavus, and Sneasel.
Those changes would’ve made HGSS even better

There are good game and then there are objectively better games. GSC is objectively one of the more superior ones simply for its soul, challenge, level design and how much it contributed to the Poke meta.

Johto was ridiculously exciting in the time of pokemania. The idea of new pokemon was absolutely mindblowing. In retrospect I can respect the fact that it was still finding its feet as a sequel, but I don't care much for it beyond nostalgia.

Also it has a huge amount of mon designs that people would call too simple or toy-like if they were in a newer generation, but Johto gets a free pass because they hadn't grown out of pokemon at the time of its release.
