I honestly think Mewtwo never quite captured the feeling it gave in it's Gen 1 sprite. It's a menacing science experiment gone wrong, and I think this sprite captured that perfectly.

Yeah I agree. Mew was far more Alien too. It added a nice layer of mystery onto the many unexplained things in Gen 1. I wasn't introduced until XY, but I can imagin a young anon coming to the conclusion Mew was an alien from its unnervng fetus design.

Kinda makes me wish they kept the designs diverse and not focused on kid friendly imaginary animals and food/objects with faces.

Where's our unsettling, yet alien beauty? Our pokemon that truly do not belong to this world?

Man, I wish they kept the unsettling Huanter design. With its piercings white eyes and jagged claws.

There are a few Pokemon that got creative close-ups or angles to make them look larger. I know these four all felt downgraded in Yellow. Yellow as whole is weird since it tries to pack in more detail than it felt like the artists knew how to, so you often have more on-model but less interesting sprites, and on occasion sprites that mimic the official art even more than Gold and Silver would.

Quite so. It was on the bulkier side, with a larger looking heading and torso, and the hunch works for something that has been living alone in a cave and maybe has not had to be alert for a while. They held on to the heaftier look for a little while but that eventually fell away. HGSS Mewtwo makes a little sad.

Some of these really fit. Alolan Persian, Drampa and Oranguru are perfect for gen 1. Alolan Diglett fits the artstyle even more than the original.
