A foil is what the rival's supposed to be though. Blue was a tough trainer like Red, but wasn't compassionate to his Pokemon. Same story for Silver and Ethan. N is a direct rival competing with Hilbert to be the hero of Unova, and is basically the main reason why Hilbert even takes the Pokemon League challenge at all.
