I don't know why it upsets you anon, it is simple by design, a pokeball mimic. adding anything would detract from that concept. Unless you wanna go with the overused "its a mimic so it needs a cartoonishly big mouth and sharp teeth" design. I think that instead it being a mine is pretty original.

That thing was a joke pokemon who got self-destruct as a "signature move"

That thing was supposed to punish players who run on pokeball thinking directly it was an item, it's litteraly the mimic from the pokemon games

Does that mean I would accept it as a good design? No!
But it's not something to pull out to excuse bad design from recent pokemons

If they knew what Pokemon would become
They would have made it more than a looking pokeball like how they did with Magnemite

Its mouth is a pokeball and the surrounding body is a bear trap. They bury themselves and bait you into thinking a weird item is on the ground (it looks smaller than an item ball but it looks distinct enough for you to want to see what it is). Then when you get close it clamps and attacks you.

There are a disgusting amount of them scattered in one of the mines.

do you not know what a Foongus looks like or remember seeing them in Unova? the top of it's head looks like a literal pokeball, unlike Voltorb who doesn't even have the pokeball-design done correctly. Voltorb is a beach ball.

I'd defend it because as far as Im aware, prior to gen 1 a Pokeball did't exist. Voltorbs design is based on something that didn't exist until voltorb itself existed.
