Is it better to evolve it as early as possible or does it not matter? I'm not sure I'll be able to evolve it at lvl 2.

it used to be, but now that you can relearn moves at any pokemon center for free it doesn't matter. one of the best changes, fuck happiness evos

Hey thanks. So no stat loss from not immediately evolving it? I can get it's friendliness up enough by lvl 4 it seems.
Agreed, fuck these kinds of evos, especially now that camp gives xp alongside friendliness.

Evolve whenever you want it has no bearing on the long term stat potential; this isn't Fire Emblem and stats aren't additive they're determined by variables affecting a formula. Gaining a Level affects that variable in the formula and the stats are refreshed to reflect it; the +__'s you see aren't actually adding anything they're just showing you what's changed and by how much.

Only time you want to evolve late is if the mon in question learns a move its preevolution gets by level up, but its evolution doesn't. Otherwise there's no reason to wait, and thankfully they made it so in gen 8 rare candies will evolve stuff if they're already level 100 and meet requirements.

There is reason to hold off actually but its a post game only thing. Things that evolve by level gain more exp if they're leveled enough to evolve but haven't.
