in theory i choose on design, but every gen (except the last two) i just happen to like the water starters, followed by the grass starters so that's who i pick. but yes there are people that are autistic enough to get tribalistic over the type of starter they pick.

There hasn't been a final evolution design for a starter I liked since Sinnoh.

I've picked a starter at random after that and boxed them right away. I respect myself too much to play through a game with a dumbass looking Intelleon on my team.

Same but with Litten and Torracat, I think both of them are amazing design, literal perfection.. and then there's Incineroar. I never evolved it past Torracat.

I've liked some since Sinnoh, but Sinnoh was the last time I liked all three final evolution enough where choosing from all three was a pain.

Venusaur is the only good grass starter in the franchise. It has both strength and utility. Non ha serperior is garbage before someone mentions it.
Swampert is the strongest water starter in pokemon. It has god tier typing and great bulk, it face rolls entire games.

Normally I would go with the fire starter since they're the rarest type in the trio, but I hate Fire/Fighting types so I box it as soon as I find a different fire type.

This is actually why I'm so goddamn hesitant to ever pick a water or grass type. There are so many water and grass Pokemon, I feel like I'm robbing myself of a big option list by already having one in my team.

On the flip side, fire Pokemon in every gen is ridiculously sparse or just plain shit. I'm 99% sure in Diamond and Pearl, you had the choice between your starter, a Ponyta, one other Pokemon, and a Skuntank that learns flamethrower.

Chimchar and Ponyta lines are the only fire lines in Diamond and Pearl.
Even the fire Elite 4 member has a Lopunny, Steelix, and Drifblim.

In older games I also found Fire my default choice, but then I realized having a Fly user is (was) a must, and both Flying/Fire deal with pretty much the same Pokémon (Grass/Bug). So I always end up with a Flying Pokemon and then some Figthing or Ground/Rock Pokemon to deal with Steel/Ice.

Somehow, gen V didn't actually have any better water options than the starter in-game, while Emboar had to compete with the godly power of Darmanitan and Serperior just sucked.

Black cats are amazing and Torracat also looks cool as hell, unlike the fursuiter. Get better taste, nerd. Besides, SM were such a joke that I literally oneshot everything with said "shitmon cat" and barely relied on my other Pokemon.
