N is indeed an immature child and that's by design and it's more fitting to the character's backstory than any other archetype in Pokemon. it's not just his indoctrination by Ghetsis that justifies this either - N's canon affinity for Pokemon means he has a perspective that literally nobody else in universe does, and part of what informs his complete lack of self awareness is that he can't empathize with how other people understand Pokemon and the world more broadly
Pokemon is hardly a franchise overflowing with literary depth, and this is more than enough to push N to "best written character" status at least in the main series games, there might be some spinoff characters I don't know about with a lot going on for them
