for a standard playthrough this is just not true, emerald is only better for a slice if endgame and even then the gen 3 systems hold it back

BF is the most overrated thing to ever exist in pokemon but even without it, emerald still edges out since the dungeons aren't as simplified and is overall more challenging. but it's not a huge difference in quality either way especially if you actually like the look of 3D pokemon

What's the difference between SM and USUM?

I heard that USUM has better postgame whereas SM handles the story better.

They cut off some of the story in USUM to change it up a bit but it leaves some plot points incomplete.

Are you sure you won't get bored revisiting the same place a couple gens later?

I suggest FRLG -> Emerald -> Platinum -> HGSS -> BW -> BW2 -> XY -> SM.

Although personally, I'd just stop after BW2.

I think the battle frontier is really fun.

If OP's going to play the games with the interest of progression, he'd do well to start with FRLG and Emerald. They provide a fuller experience than their later counterparts.

5- Black then Black 2 or White then White 2, they're actually sequels not "third games" so they're worth playing as well

I don't recommend playing Gen 3 to Gen 4 just for the story.

It'll probably be disorienting to go back and you won't want to finish. Do FRLG / Emerald then Platinum -> HG/SS so you can experience the game's development in full. FRLG and Emerald exist concurrently on the timeline. As do Pt and HGSS.
