I'm gonna do it.
I was always a genwunner and I'll always be one, but I think it's time to give a chance to other Pokémon games.
Therefore, I decided to play ONE game of EVERY gen.

Sun and Moon have a better story because USUM changed the original story. Its still a very cool story but it makes more sense in Sun and Moon. If you don't give a shit about the story or barely care them USUM is hella the way to go, postgame Wormhole stuff is my favorite and the Rocket mission fanservice is a blast.

You should play a real gen 2 game, skip the 3DS and Switch titles, and also play HG or SS.

Sapphire is the better gen 3 game if you're just playing through it. The added features in Emerald are only worth it if you play the post-game, and some changes they made to it make the game sloppier, like the red/blue orbs not making sense anymore, or replacing the best champion with the lamest one.

The story quests appear to be made mainly with Team Aqua in mind, so a lot of them are just lazily pasted onto Magma. In Ruby, Team Magma ends up in an aqua's watery hq, and Groudon ends up being underwater iirc. Emerald gives Magma their own much better hq, and puts Groudon in a volcano in the post-game, but it's not worth skipping Steven as the champ unless you're really interested in seeing a nicer Magma hq.

not that anon but silver was my first game and no, I wouldn't. assuming you've never played either of them, crystal is objectively better

not gen 2, but it is johto and imo those games are the pinnacle of the series mechanically, visually and in terms of quality of life, so frankly you should play it anyway

Also voting that you're only going to play only one of HGSS or Crystal, you should play one of the Gen 4 remakes (Probably HG since the Whirl Islands are less fun to go through).

Also, you really should go for White/White 2. Mostly because each game has an exclusive postgame area, and White's is miles better, and results in the game having many more exclusives. BW2 are built around getting the same color as the first version, so you'd have to play White 2 over Black 2 as well.

USUM's story is signifcantly more retarded than SM, if you care about that sort of thing. Otherwise USUM has nice qol changes, and more Pokemon.
