Okay so i had this idea, not many people know a lot about pokemon, or at least their insparations, so let's fix that! This is purely to educate people, and i have some knowledge gathered from poketubers, bulbapedia and just general knowledge of mythology and animals. If you channers wish we can make this a full on thread type!

The kanto starters, according to sugimori, are based on animals you can find in your back yard. A frog/toad, a salamander/lizard and a turtle/tortoise. Bulbasaur for example is very toad like of course.

Charmander itself is easy enough, the salamander. Specifically the brittish faery kind where they're made up of fire. This came from the assumption that salamanders where born from fire, however this is false as its easily explained to be that the wood gathered to make the fire contained salamanders who ran out of the fire when it got too hot, leading to the misconsception.

Charmeleon itself is a raptor or dromaeosaur like a velociraptor, although it's primarily just a transitional stage. The body type is very raptor like and while i don't know which one for certain it is really obvious to me. My only complaint is that while it has chameleon in the name it shares no traits with it such as the color change.

Algae growing on a turtle shell is normal. In fact most wild turtles have some algae growing on their carapace. That being said if you own a turtle you can’t completely ignore the algae on the shell. Now before we close off the kanto starters i should state the specific kind of turtle squirtle is, is the japanese pod turtle. Now onto the big blue boy himself! Blastoise. Now blastoise doesn't have much of a basis, they took a tank and combined it with a tortoise, but the holes its canons come out of are possibly based on the muscle system of a clam/oyster which earned it the shelfish species. The canons themselves are based on pressurized water pumps which are used in the creation of difficult to sculpt metals rather than lazers. Yes it is entirely possible to cut through steel with water its dex entries aren't that far off.

Chickorita is also based on the chicory, a plant commonly used in cooking and a part of the dandalion family. Chicories are specifically used for their leaves, which can be seen in chickoritas leaf although they look different i believe the company simplified it to a basic leaf shape.

The specific sauropod it is most likely based on is apatosaurs! Fun fact about apatosaurus, like other sauropods they had a specially developed lung system different from mammals which allowed them to be much lighter than they would be and breath better, which is why their neck vertibrae are commonly seen with huge holes in them.

Fun fact about the weasel, if it was as big as say a cat or dog it would be the top predator on the planet as it requires itself to eat its own body weight in meat. The leaf tailed gecko is pretty obvious to be a grass type. My personal favorite is the satanic leaf-tailed gecko, a madagascar native. Conifer trees like ferns do pollinate, and in reference to the larger plant the orbs got larger as well. The ability to shoot its tail off like a rocket is a reference to the gecko's ability to drop its tail to distract predators, however they also do this if stressed. A particular warning to leopard gecko owners, it is common for them to do this, also u can tell if its healthy by how fat the tail is, if it's skinny it is starving. Petsmart is horrible with this.

As you can see from this mudskipper, the mudkip line inherited its dorsal fin and tail fin from it. It also inherited the ground typing due to mudskippers, well living in the mud! While not obvious with oshawott or dewott it is very much obvious with samurott that it's a samurai. Samurai at one point where reguarded as highly as nobels and where viewed like knights. If you look at the shell armor on its arms and legs u can clearly see the samurai esque ness.
