Any oldfags here from when gen 4 was first revealed? I'm curious, were people upset even back then that we didn't get a 3d pokemon game? Were people expecting mario 64 ds level graphics?

I wasn't, I had taken a hiatus from Pokemon and diamond was really where I dove back in.
The good pixel art and huge world kept me invested enough and the lack of any former 3d handheld Pokemon didn't put any kind of 'its 2d so it's bad' stigma in my mind.

Oh, I remember. I wasn't expecting full 3D but we were disapointed that it looked so similar to the GBA games. It still had the same simple colors, square overworld, empty battle backgrounds, it was a disappointment. Everyone's head looking massive because of the pseudo 3D depth, which could barely be considered an improvement since the games had lost definistion, lost FPS and the overworld looked messy/shaked in movement.
We liked the return of day/night cycle though. I thought it was gone for ever. And this time it had more stages like dawn, midnight... that was heavily advertised and we ate it happily.

Nah people complained about the Sinnoh dex not having all the cross-gens and the games overall being really fucking slow even then. I was one of them since I played Pearl at release. Ironically, I skipped gen 3 so Pearl got me back into it, for better or worse.

Gen 4 hype season: We called the region Shinnou, people were divided between loving or hating the starters final evos for being overdesigned, same with the cross gen evos. Probopass was very hated for having a fucking mustache. Graphics looked to be more of the same. We liked the new day/night cycle, we were super hyped for wifi battling and trading. Dawn became quickly popular.

The anime aired in Japan before the west got the games. I remember watching a stream with people from a fan forum. People were hopeful that Pokémon was finally taking a more adult approach because the first DP episode (I think) showed an Ariados trying to eat Pikachu or something. Like, many were genuinely tired of the childish stigma the brand had developed while most fans were in high school. Lmao.

Gen 4 post release: competitive people were happy for the Special split. Many were angry at the high amount of legendaries lowering the value of the concept, many were pissed at pointless mythicals. Hacked mons started appearing fucking everywhere, GTS was a mess of hacks and impossible requests. By this time the idea that Pokémon was "always the same" became popular among oalmost all gaming communities and normies. The usual response to any talk about Pokémon was "they really run out of ideas lol". I'm sure Masuda was inspired by all this feedback when he decided to make gen V feel different in all the ways it did.

I forgot 07 and 08 were over a decade ago. I pity the zoomers who never experienced the Internet at its peak.

Gen 4 hype season though was fucking great. It was back before Pokemon was yearly. Before the dark times. A new gen came with new hardware and fucking meant something. New Pokemon were dripfed to us slowly over years. Not a year, years. Pokemon like Munchlax and Bonsly slowly appeared in the spin offs and anime. It was an incredible time.

...a lot of people are really fucking stupid. Most DS games that opted for 3d models ended up just looking like shitty N64 ports, probably because the DS itself pretty much was a portable N64. Sticking with 2d+sprites for the DS pokemon games was a mercy I appreciated even at the time.

No one expected a fully 3D game. A lot of DS games were still using sprites and looking gorgeous. 2D/3D was mainly a style choice and sprites still had higher visual fidelity than 3D.
I remember complaints about the over world sprites looking chubby and weird but it wasn't as vitriolic as what you hear nowadays. I think people were more accepting of technical limitations at the time. Your expectations are lower when you know that a CD can only hold a couple hours of music, and CDs are way bigger than portable game cartridges.

It came from the slow movement speeds (surfing is the slowest in the series in Diamond/Pearl), areas that force the player to slow down due to the environment (literal shit in the Great Marsh/deep snow in the northern snow routes), the HP bar speed scaling to how many HP a Pokemon has (Blissey being the worst offender of having a slow HP bar speed), and the amount of areas with heavy HM usage. These aren't that big of a deal imo, but I can see why some people would get annoyed by some of these things.

If you're using an emulator switch to melon ds as its the best one available. If you are using a flashcart you may need to find a kernel for it which has better rom support. Look into replacing with wood r4 if you have an old card

Wifi trading, wifi battles, GTS, platinum brought back the frontier too.

It was overall really fucking good. Pokemon design was the only complaint back then.
