Gamefreak doesn't wanna break compatibility too hard by actually changing up the games so the only way they can differentiate things is by constantly cycling out features. Certainly not every feature needs to be in every game but there was no real reason for something like character customization to be cut in ORAS except for that fucked up business model

I found them difficult to play through (read: dropped after the first island) because i kept getting stopped for cutscene after cutscene. I'm sure i would have been complaining about length otherwise but after over a decade i wish i'd just be able to get on with the game.

Which is a shame because everything else about the region is great (bar the starters). But if the gameplay is bad, the whole experience will end up tainted.

I think SuMo were unfairly shit on because people were bored of Pokémon after XY and ORAS poisoned the well. Taken on their own, they're good fucking games that understand what made the series popular in the first place, while changing things up when they could. It's not the best narrative or the best region or the best set of new mons, but it's just a joy to play.
Also, your argument is flawed because there are no XY apologists.
