dark pulse, ok, obligatory stab
psychic, ok for hitting fighting-types and maybe fairies, but weak as fuck
shadow ball is redundant as fuck because you already have stab dark pulse
grass knot is unreliable and it doesnt even manage to 3HKO Tyranitar unless you get off a Nasty Plot beforehand

and that's the extent of its specially-based movepool

It is probably not completely terrible in doubles because you have unburden stab snarl and screech / fake tears. All the terrain setters now kind of suck, but when rillaboom gets it’s HA you can probably do something like scarf rillaboom + screech theevel to nuke something. That worked with whimsicott in some older gens.

Alternatively, boost its Special Attack to 110 and give it some semblance of coverage and it’d be a viable Unburden abuser.

In fairness, I managed to complete the Battle Tower with one with a set of Snarl/NP/Dark Pulse/Psychic with Throat Spray and Unburden. It was surprisingly decent.

Grass Knot is bad against TTar because TTar is a fucking specially defensive powerhouse in sand. That's like saying "well Lucario can't OHKO Blissey with Focus Blast even at +2SpA so it's shit". Thievul's offensive movepool is fine, its stats just aren't wallbreaking material unless you can set up. Which isn't abnormal because it's about as threatening offensively as Raticate or Liepard due to it basically being an early-game rodent.
