Would I enjoy Sword and Shield if I'm the most casual Pokemonfag possible? I haven't been a part of the community for years but I've glanced at the controversies leading up to the latest game's release.

It’s an enjoyable game.
I bought it because all my games pre gen 6 got stolen so I had no Pokémon I was attached too since the beginning.
It’s the first time I enjoyed filling out the dex.
Is it flawed? Yes
Is it the end of Pokémon as we know it? Hard to say, but is very doubtful.

Id say go for it

This. It's the worst Pokemon game released so far, and one of the worst games on the Switch. Just buy USUM, it's hardly any worse graphically and that's the only thing SS has over it.

Ultra Sun/Moon is a much more fun game. Sword and Shield will be like restarting with Colosseum, not fun, not a real pokemon experience.

Not OP but I'm basically in the same boat of not having played any Pokemon games that were released in the past decade. I guess my main question would be if I buy USUM and get the urge do anything online like trade or battling would I be fucked because the whole community moved on to the next game?

I will agree that the character models have not held up at all besides Wes and maybe Rui but the rest of the game is way better than anything SM/USUM or XY was able to shit out.

The story is only about 20 hours long, and the online stuff has a bad habit of disconnecting. Raid battles are also broken because the COM trainers are garbage and usually loose you the battle.

I mean, in part it's purely coincidental, as in this is the first time that I'm actually bothering to fill the pokedex, try out breeding, exchanging pokemons etc. In a sense it could've been any of the games if it came out today, although I'm sure the QOL changes here and there are a big bonus - being able to "select" wild pokemons instead of blindly walking into random encounters alone takes away a lot of the tedium that generally wears me out in JRPGs in general

I did try SuMo at some point but the beginning was kinda slow and i started ignoring the game pretty soon, only got two medals i think
