I didn't have to pay but it took me like half-year to get it for free
Basically the game has 'loyalty points' you can get by doing daily missions or defeating a boss that appears every 6 hours in every channel(tho it goes down in seconds so you need to be quick)
Then you can buy Ruby coins on the Loyalty shop, since it's free you can only buy a limited amount per week
Then they have this slot machine you can spend your coins into, the contents change every other day and you can get lots of cash stuff or eidolon key fragments, you need to get 10 fragments for a full key
Every eidolon has 4 levels though, each needing a full key but you only need 1, you can get fragments by sending them on a fetch quest and they bring a gift every 20 minutes or so, one of which can be a fragment
You can also get fragments or even full keys doing instance dungeons, too
Game is really generous when it comes to free stuff, if you are patient
I got a full set of weapons and armor to +20 (maximum being +30) and a bunch of eidolon without spending a single dollar
