They weren't ads for the movie, considering you got them AT the movie.

There is an official translation, but they aren't tournament legal.

Not directly, but it's obvious how it works.

The ancient Mew card meant anyone who had any interest in collecting cards needed to go see the movie, even if they didn't care about the anime or w/e. It also meant people who only cared about the anime had a gateway into the TCG by getting an especially cool looking rare card. It's like an event in a mobile game or something.

Proxie? Yeah, sure. Get a pack of penny sleeves, a deck of playing cards, then print out the cards and slide them over the face of the cards. Its like 4 bucks, a bit more if you need to pay for printing.
Its what me and my mates do at uni when there's a new Magic set or we want to play some pokemon.

Actually, all 18 of the Southern Islands cards were pretty neat - when they were put together in groups of three, the artwork formed 6 distinct 'postcards'. Here's the complete 'Sky' postcard formed by Mew, Pidgeot, and Onix from the set.

I remember seeing the box to this Japanese set of cards in a crane game thing in the mall back when I was a kid.
I spent too much time and money trying to get it, only to no avail. I still remember them... at least it wouldn't be too expensive to buy nowadays.
