It's not open world, and it coppied what Let's go did. You can't call that improvement.
Post game also has little to do, only hardcore pokemon fans will enjoy it.

Go play the Stadium games, XD, Colosseum, and Battle Revolution to see peak pokemon battles.
For good story, Gen 5 was the last good gen for the story.
