STAB wasn't heavily promoted in the first few games, really not until gen 4. You would often have a mistyped move that did more damage than any STAB move; either because its BP was so high or because you were a physical mon with a special-focused type, or vice versa. Pinsir actually benefitted hard in those games from having normal and fighting moves.
