There's big differences between pokemon and irl animals.

Pokemon are much more intelligent/mentally developed than real-life animals to the point where they have honour and competitiveness for sport. IRL animals fight because they're abused and conditioned from a young age to fight. There's a lot of mental and physical trauma to make them that way.

Also, pokemon can be healed practically instantly, causing no long-lasting effects. We here in the real world have to heal, quite slowly compared to the pokemon world. No scars, nothing.

So. No, it isn't the same.

I would think that some sort of reform would be needed to give Pokemon some more rights, but no N is too radical

Maybe something like this:
1)Some moves like guillotine are banned as it's too painful on the mon
2) A Pokemon can forfeit the match if it wants to and a trainer is obligated to teach the mon how to do so
3)You cannot battle a mon that is 250 bst below your own or it can't be 50 levels below (So now you can't use level 100 Mega Rayquazas to use dragon ascent on level 2 wurmples)

Sounds fair?

Remember, they encounter *you* when you walk in the grass and its also why you can't catch a fainted pokemon, the test to catch it is over because you couldn't do restraint. Here's why, If you really examine pokemon and human relationships they both need each other. Some pokemon are unable to exist without humans unless they reach very specific circumstances such as any baby pokemon ever who's parents require an inscence or man made pokemon or even forms of pokemon such as trash cloak burmy & wormadam. Pokemon in the wild may not have much of a chance of surviving as well without humans. Humans definantly wouldn't survive without pokemon as even a pidgey can learn dangerous moves if it lives long enough. Pretty much every trade evo wouldn't exist without humans. It has been demonstrated that ancient civilizations couldn't live without pokemon and while it has also been shown that some humans harrass and hurt the pokemon they own, ultimately not every human has to be like that. Some pokemon don't want to be caught at all and will escape or they do but want you to prove that you can train them. In the series it is demonstrated multiple times that if a pokemon doesn't want to battle then it won't or if it wants to then it will. Ash's charizard, Iris's excadrill, Mallows tsareena, etc... Pokemon will also outlive people for the most part. So no i don't agree that people shouldn't own pokemon. Now if you bring up whether or not they should put them into battle, i have a theory that it originally started off as humans training their pokes against each other to make them stronger so they could better protect themselves and the people they care about and it eventually grew from there. Pokemon also get an assured home, food, and safety in return and any time they get hurt they're instantly healed although sometimes pokes do die it's very rare.

Pokemon aren't animals and can and do consent to combat for sport. They also willfully disobey trainers when it suits them.

There is zero indication of this from normal battling.
The only real argument that could be made is that they were captured against their will, but trainers have been known to release their Pokemon from time to time. If you can't earn the respect and friendship of a Pokemon, they can be freed.

The whole "Pokemon used to be shackled as slaves" directly contradicts what's seen in the games. Wars existed but Pokemon were members of it and not just tools. AZ's floette left him because she didn't like the man he became and only returned once he redeemed himself. Pokemon choose to work alongside humans. Pokeballs were invented as a way to conveniently transport and protect Pokemon.
