Why were people so obsessed with getting free movement and camera?

It doesn't add anything to the game. In fact it kinda killed the vibe of grid-based world design and movement which was much comfier.

Adding freedom and making you choose what do you want to see is a good thing. If you don't mind it, or you don't care, that's your problem, your taste. For me it's important to have something like this in a pokémon game, especially with OW mons, because in this way i can see around me which pokémon has spawned and if i can walk there without encountering something. In S/S i felt very uncomfortable in the first Mine trying to pass it backwards (because of a post-game Oleana dialogue and Rose rare card) because of how the camera is setted.

2D is better though, despite that Pokemon has never perfected it. Gen 5 feels better to play than games like Xenoblade or Dragon Quest because grid is nice and 3D is bad.

Anyway, come to think of it, Octopath is an example of perfected 2D. Or at least very close to perfection, despite not being on a grid. Again, Xenoblade and DQ feel like trash in comparison to that and Octopath would be better if it were grid based.

This was an interesting topic to discuss for once, shame OP is just baiting and doesn't have a clue about level design.
Free movement and camera in swsh is handled like shit. That's why 2D was better. Remember that 2D Pokémon games were when effort was put in the development. Every aspect of swsh 3D work is laughable. Doesn't come close to meeting 3D standards in 2019. Nor 2009 standards. The poképark games had better 3D than Gen 8.

You keep acting like good 3d level design doesn't exist, and that's straight up lying.
Another reason why 2D seems better is because 2d mapping is way way easier. Just implementing free camera movement does not make your 3d area good. You need a different design philosophy when creating a 3d world. Changing development philosophy is something Game Freak is especially bad at. That doesn't mean that good 3d games don't exist.

3D is not the problem, the ancient turn based combat is.You can't do anything new gameplay wise, so you have to make gimmicks so you can justify people to buy your shitty game.

Dragon Age Origins is one of my favorite games, not for its level design or game feel though. But thinking about it, I remember that I also love Paper Mario 64 and Thousand Year Door a lot, they probably feel about as good as 2D Pokemon games, if not better in some cases. Thing is that those games didn't have free cameras either, with the maps set up like some kind of diorama.

That's one of the points of there being multiple franchises. So they each can appeal to their own groups of people. When you change an existing thing too much it just alienates the audience it has.
I don't believe for one second that Pokemon, or even Mario or Zelda for that matter, would be as popular if they had constantly thrown what makes them good out the window in favor of being innovative for the sake of it or trying to reel in more people with drastic changes to their core structures.

Pokemon is honestly one of the few franchises where i don't feel the "age" of the of the turn based system, it almost seems necessary because of how the game is based around handling hundreds of characters/monsters that thus need a strict control system. The gameplay can still be mixed up in secondary - like how the recent titles are putting less emphasis on RNG blind encounters for example

Regardless of your opinion, ORAS was objectively better graphically than XY and SM was better than both. Sword Shield once again greatly improves on SM.

We have no reason to believe otherwise. Gamefreak makes bad choices and is behind the curve compared to many devs, but they do consistently put out superior games than the previous technologically.
