This was a huge gripe of mine, too. I feel like they added in those sorts of roadblocks because they didn't have time to make it so you couldn't battle all the gyms in whatever order, or visit the towns and trigger events they didn't want you to yet.

99% of the time you spend avoiding them and they don't even make the wild area look "alive" because you can see a bunch of pokemon walking in the grass.
What was their purpose afterall?

Nope. It was cool to see a strong Pokemon in the Wild Area and then get motivation to come back and catch it.

honestly this is pretty on point for me too, so much of the map felt like it was built to be approachable from at least two directions then they have a bunch of random NPCs blocking every other route except the game freak path

The only time I ever got lost as a kid was in Platinum, when I forgot to use that shit on the Psyducks that were having an orgy on that one route. Ironic that a roadblock was the cause of me getting lost simply because it was so out of the way that I forgot about it altogether.

And like >>41860283 said, there was a time when caves actually became more complex with each gen, but people started complaining about it (mainly Japanese players most likely) and that convinced them to never put effort into them again.
