You can interact with the pokemon with both, you can pretend to play with the pokemon in both, and the pokemon camp offers more features. on a baseline, the only thing following pokemon adds is a physical aspect of seeing your pokemon walking as opposed to knowing your pokemon is with you.
now, I agree that there is some sentimental value to this, but it's vapid at best. like I said, before, if there were actual physical struggles in traveling the overworld with your pokemon, following pokemon would be a good feature because you can see your pokemon struggling with you. it builds that sense of bond for players more than seeing a bunch of pixels following you around and eventually fading into your periphery.
