Gen 2 was heavily flawed and not anything like the masterpiece that is HGSS. Gen 3 gives you dark and steel types so much earlier, hoenn even has an early fairy in ORAS with Ralts.

They stuck poison on everything in gen 1 for some reason. I don't think there was any need for bulbasaur etc to be part poison too since there is only 1 mono grass type in the whole game

Literally only Beedrill and Venomoth are part poison. Meanwhile you also get Scyther, Pinsir, Butterfree, and Parasect making Bug type one of the few types that have enough options to mono type. Bugfags have a mental disorder and persecution complex for no reason.

Still less cucked than steel. Only five families in gen 2 had steel type in their line. Of those five, two were locked behind trade evos (steelix and scizor), one was a version exclusive (skarmory), and the other two learn ZERO steel moves (magnemite/ton, forretress).

Gen 1 has a lot of tisms when it comes to type combos.
Grass is just as bad as Bug when it comes to being paired with Poison. Even the Bulbasaur line is part Poison, despite its dex entry stating that the nectar is nutritious.
Minus the fossils, every single Rock was also part Ground. It makes sense for things like Onix, which is known for boring into the ground at high speeds, but the Geodude and Rhyhorn lines seemingly only have it to get STAB on Earthquake, and this becomes very apparent when you realize that Larvitar and Pupitar are Ground-type, and are one of the few lines that actually learn EQ through level up.
Not to mention, gen 1 started the retarded trend of making every regular Flying-type bird also part Normal for no real good reason, as it just makes their Fighting resistance worthless. Every regional bird really should be mono-flying; there's no reason why not except tradition.

Yeah, hindsight is 20/20, but there's a lot they could have done to having the various type combos be better. They could have also had Gengar be pure Ghost to remove it's psychic weakness and represent it becoming more 'solid' compared to Ghastly and Haunter. The Geodude line could have easily been pure Rock, and the birds aside from Farfetch'd and Doduo/Dodrio really should just ditch normal.

It'd also probably be more beneficial if the Bulbasaur and Oddish lines weren't part poison, as neither of them is described as exceptionally toxic unlike Victreebel's acid. Odds are dual-types were a more last minute addition, and so they slapped it on as many things as they could think of

Having them be rare is fine. Having them be randomly shoved into routes on Kanto was a mistake. Having Slugma be a 5% encounter in the deeper parts of Mt. Mortar during a certain time of day would have still made it rare, but it would have still made it a Johto pokemon you could find, catch, and raise at a point in the game where it would still be useful.

I'm pretty sure the only Gen 2 Pokemon line you can't get before the E4 in HGSS is Houndour. Everything else is obtainable thanks to the Safari Zone/Primo/etc.

I would put Larvitar in Tohjo falls instead. Available earlier, since you only need surf, but far less likely to stumble across it randomly, since Tohjo falls has a very minimal land area, wheras a player will be walking a lot in Victory Road
