Just because one is newer doesn't mean it's any less normal than the more traditional one. In fact I'd argue this isn't even newer/less common, as sculptures/figures have been part of the art world forever. Anime figures may be mass produced in plastic but artists still designed them and these days almost every bit of art in anyone's home be it a painting or a ceramic figure on the kitchen counter is also mass produced. Look at companies like Home Interiors, people collect and pay a lot for that shit and it's all mass produced, it's just nobody blinks at that because it's more traditional home decor.
