Compare that to the Stadium games that let you build a team with the entire fucking dex or Colosseum and XD that let you use the mons from your single player game. There is no excuse for the rentals in this game to be so fucking limited, and the only reason they are this limited is to force players to own the DS games.
Also think about how these games are targeted towards kids that wouldn't know about the fact that you need the DS games. Imagine getting into Pokémon through the anime and getting this game for Christmas because you only own a Wii only for the game to say, "Sorry kid, you don't own the DS games? Pshh, everyone should own the DS games! Here, have this half-baked rental team that's worthless as fuck. You want to actually have fun? Better buy a DS and a Pokémon game to go with it!" Its shitty as fuck, and it honestly one of the shittiest things a Pokémon game has done
