Totodile himself is easily the best designed starter in the entire series, and Gen 2 starters are overall very strong designs. But they aren’t furbait so zoomers hate them

Gen 2 was my first gen and the Gatr as my first starter has al special place in my heart BUT his stats/movepool are averaging all around though. It's as many peopke say, he's a slightly inferior gyarados. Gen2 starters REALLY needed to get their megas, especially so feraligatr could make it's own niche.

Either way, I love the fuck out of his design though.

I at least want the recognition that the johto starters exist at all. They definitely feel the most left in the dust these days, especially because of their lack of secondary types. Galar have signature moves to their name for now.

I think giving starter (semi)exclusive moves has been a thing since kalos but theyre all usually underwhelming anyway.

They give them exclusive moves but a gen later end up giving them to other mon as egg moves or otherwise. You feel for the Alolan Starters when they lost their exclusive z moves so quickly.
Limiting their bst for in game would be strange, everyone I grew up with had their starter carry their first playthrough as kids anyway. I suppose comparing it to pseudo legendaries, who evolve very late, might be the cause as they always have starters fully evolve around the 30-36 range, so consistently mid game.

Feraligatr isn't completly outclassed by Gyarados after Gen 6. Because Sheer Force, Feraligatr have more imediate strenght and actually has coverage options to hit anything that isn't a bulky Water Type for massive damage. Feraligatr also isn't stuck with only Dragon Dance to boost himself, he could easily use Agility to late-game clean or Swords Dance for just insane levels of damage. Gyarados managed rise to OU on Gen 7 because Z-Moves being favorable to his Moxie and because with Flyinium Z, he could actually beat bulky water types, which Feraligatr never could properly. Feraligatr has a unique role on the metagame, he have the strongest coverage options between physical Water types, the metagame just wasn't favorable for him with Rotom-Wash, Tapu Fini, Azumarill and other Water types that completly wall him.

I honestly dont know why they stick to that gimmick of temporary exclusive mediocre moves. Theyre also outclassed the moment they come out like greninja's shitty version of aqua jet, delphox's shitty flamethrower, and chesnaught's situational version of protect.

Yes, almost every kid overlevels their starter to steam roll the entire game but I think they just add those stat limits for the same reason why other RPG games start you off with weak equipment/skills, so you can learn with them and move on to other methods of playing. Having your starter's final evo be pseudo/mythical level is kinda weird.

Hidden abilities is when GF loses their shit because greninja protean was just obnoxious

Doesn't its lack of adaptability to the meta prove it as inferior, though? The signs of being good should be the fact that you can take whatever the meta throws on you, which clearly is lacked by Feraligatr as it has no options against bulky waters while Gyarados makes excellent use of every new gimmick every gen, proving it can withstand the test of time and multiple different metas.

Fisheous rend just seems like this generations version of Parental Bond or Gale wings. There's no way they made such a ridiculously broken move by accident and combined it with strong jaw for extda salt. It's a goddamn stab boosted explosion at zero cost, it's hilarious.

You're right on your point but not completly. Gyarados indeed adapts better to new metas but this is mostly because the current generational gimmicks are exploitable by Gyarados. He got a Mega, he got a reliable nuke with Supersonic Skystrike and he got Dynamax breaking the balance completly. However, Gyarados is reliant on the gimmicks to hold his position, he isn't either the hardest hitting nor has the best learnset between the Water types. If Gyarados enter on a new generation where he can't abuse the gimmick, possibly other Water types will take his place, like Crawdaunt, Cloyster, Drednaw or even Feraligatr for being the most safe options around. Gyarados currently is rolling a dice when comes to viability, it's just that he is winning for three generations in a row.

He's overall alright
and I love his design and gators in general, but he's basically a worse gyarados, I feel like he needs to have more of an identity to set him apart more, maybe fix his stats up.
Maybe giving another type might help set him apart.
Same issue as exploding badger, he's just Charizard but worse in some ways.
My opinion gen 2 starters look great design wise, but ingame fall apart.

It's mixed bag actually, Mega Sceptile doesn't change to much, but what does change looks fairly nice, the pic you have is way to over designed.
But then you get case where the mega looks like it was fanart like Swampert where the change just kinda looks dumb and the fanart gives him more simple but nice changes with sceptile.
But to each their own I guess.
