What sparked Pikachu's popularity? Wasn't he just a regular mon in the original game? Did the anime make him popular or was he chosen for the anime because of his popularity?

He is a darker, fatter and more convoluted design than Pikachu's. It wasn't until Gen 7 that they managed to reimagine Raichu with Alolan that made him adorable.

While Alola-Rai is adorable I honestly prefer OG-Rai's sharper features and color scheme.

What made Pikachu so special in gen 1 was its encounter rate. Its cute design has a lot to do with it as well.
