There was also the Pewter Museum getting shut down, Safari Zone being gone, the tiny Mt.Moon, or the radio station being built on top of Lavender Tower. Kanto was a wasteland. Though it does sort of work out as a way to express the passage of time.

GSC was the peak for sure

Back in that time mobile phones were pretty garbage if you even had one at all, the amount of content and cool shit that was on a gameboy color with a GSC cart was staggering.

Only game that I feel comes close from that time is Oracle of Ages/Seasons

The one thing I don't like about the GSC soundtrack is Cinnabar reusing the Saffron City theme.It's out of place and maybe even a little disturbing. HGSS came through with a proper remix.

But today, some of them didn't match today standards of minimum playability even if played by someone for the first time, specially if back then the game was THE SHIT.

Gen 2 Kanto isnt meant to be a second half, it's meant to be a post game bonus area. When people talk about wanting to visit multiple regions again, they're pretty much asking for the concept not what was really executed. The spirit of Gen 2 Kanto was carried on through the Battle Frontier in Gen 3, the post game island in Sinnoh,exploring the last 3rd of Unova, and half of Poni Island in Alola

I wouldn't call all the gutted dungeons and locations "barely noticeable" unless you didn't play RBY at all. This shit suck out to me when I was 11 years old at the time too. GSC is still an achievement in terms of content on a Gameboy though, and at least HGSS could restore it all.

Kanto wasn't even supposed to be in the original gen 2 games, so they took an incredibly minimalist approach with many areas in Kanto. Play HGSS instead.

The strangest thing about this is there isn't even an attempt to justify it in universe. The Lavanser radio station is blocked off to prevent a takeover like in Johto, the safari zone becones Pal Park, the graves of pokemon were moved underground and made inaccesible (most likely to prevent another takeover like in the Kanto games) but they provide no reason for Mt Moon just becoming a tiny hallway.

An NPC said that big earthquakes greatly change the cave interiors sometimes. It's the in-universe reason why Mt. Moon, Seafoam and Unknown Dungeon ended up being so small, or blocked off entirely.

I’m on board with this. Gen 4’s battle art/backgrounds/sprites are just so bland and flat. HGSS are much better in every way except for battle aesthetics. (Overworks aesthetic improved though, in many areas).
