I also, feel like Gen V was right before a certain cultural shift, in both Japan and the West that caused a massive exodus in fan art and porn online. Characters like Misty, May, Dawn and Cynthia were prominent even before this shift, but minor characters now had the opportunity to explode into their own popularity. So while Maylene in Gen 4 has a few hundred pictures on sites like Pixiv or Twitter or Tumblr, Lana and Bea are have reached thousands already. And compare Juniper to Melony, or perhaps even Burnett. Burnett (I think) has less fan art than Juniper does, but you know what she has is a lot more than what she would have gotten if she wasn't in SM.

That would correlate with the idea that a notable number people "checked out" during Gen 5 (what with those paltry, meager, tepid 12 million copies sold). Personally I'm more interested in guessing when different generations of child super fans become old enough to become adult superfans/waifufags, and if that has anything to do with it. e.g. the youngest of the Pokemon kids were no longer children by Gen 4, etc. You can also factor in different phases of social media machine for sharing art and Pokemon in general. Interesting to the ponder.
