I get why Kanto gets so much pandering, a lot of franchises these days nostalgia-bait hard. But I never got why Johto gets left out of it since a large part of Johto was during pokemania. In my experience a lot of "genwunners" love Johto just as much as Kanto if not more. Pic related as an example of this.

Is it because the end of gen 2 was where pokemania fell off? Because it seems like gen 3 gets the blame for that anyway.

Yes, Masuda actually addressed this in an interview. This is the main reason why developing Ruby/Sapphire was such a stressful experiencing for him.

Toy stores that used to be filled with Pokémon toys were clearing out their stock, and when visiting America, Masuda says he noticed that all the Pokémon merchandise, including the unofficial toys featured at mall kiosks, were beginning to disappear. "The next time I visited it was all Star Wars. Everyone was saying it was on a downtrend, the fad’s over and I really felt that pressure to make something amazing," Masuda says.

The fad was indeed over, but they had to prove that Pokemon wasn't just a fad and had staying power. Masuda and the team succeeded, and here we are today.

I remember Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow being cool but when Gold, Silver and especially Crystal rolled around if you were still playing Pokemon instead of a shitty sports game then you were called a faggot and picked on.

Now the people who called you a faggot for playing gens 2 and beyond are posting all over twitter about how they are the biggest pokemon fans and are the very reason why a game like SwShit can sell 6 million in 24 hours. I hope they all choke Gamefreaks dick.

It's a little interesting to hear that pokemania's death weighed on the RS dev team, since it was a step backwards from GS in a lot of ways if you didn't care about competitive play. I remember stuff like gutting day/night and having only 1 region left a lot of fans bitter.

It was already dead because that's what fads do; they fade. Hoenn proved that while Pokemania was over, Pokemon, as a franchise, still had life.

Yup, Hoenn killed it. Masuda playing stupid on the why, but everyone who lived through it remembers the reasons people "suddenly" thought Pokemon was dead.

In the States, Pokémon started with the anime and dropped off after the First Movie. The games were barely relevant at any point.
