That's literally included in the list of areas in OPs image. It still results in less overall areas this gen, even if you count each segment of the wild area as a separate location, which seems like a handicap in Sword and Shield's favor since there's so very little to a lot of those segments.

It's absolutely true though. For the most part, the different areas in the wild area serve as boundaries for different weather conditions. A lot of them don't have distinguishing characteristics or many unique landmarks. The desert ruins are the only thing that breaks up the topology.

Honestly, I'd say the Wild Area is more like two or three locations despite all the separate nodes. Most of those only exist so there can be multiple weather types at once. It's more like: The area outside of Motostoke, the area outside of Hammerlocke and then the area that is inaccessible till you get the water bike.

The Wild Zone, in and of itself, would be a nice feature in an otherwise normal-sized Pokemon game. But SwSh effectively has five decent routes, five hallways, and one Safari Zone with absolutely no dungeons. Its campaign is half the size of even the first games'.

In gen III you were always going back to Mauville, to Mt Chimmey either to go to Lavaridge or following the path to Fallarbor. Don't forget Petalburg and all the way back to Rustboro because of Meteor Falls.
