I know it's hard for people to decide what are the best games among the 2D era. And a lot of it is opinions. But can we at the very least come together and agree that X, Y and beyond are all horrible games?

X and Y aren't even that bad, you still had the feel of pokemon with a more top-down approach. Sun and Moon is where shit hits the fan and the more realistic character models come in, making pokemon scaling look even worse and causing routes to feel smaller and cramped. SwSh much more similar to Sun and Moon, if they expanded on what they have with X and Y they'd have better games

I liked the Hawaiian setting. Most of the Pokemon were interesting, and at least one of them (Tsareena) became one of my favorites. None of the characters bothered me; Lusamine's story was interesting, Gladion was good, I liked Hau well enough, and Lillie was okay. Most of the music was pretty good, though I only warmed up to the Solgaleo/Lunala theme over time. I liked the change of pace from Gyms, and I thought the Totem Battles were cool. The cutscenes never bothered me, and frankly I think most people who complain about them have never played a real JRPG; I was more annoyed by the Rotomdex than anything else.

No? XY improved the gameplay in many meaningful ways, like online / multiplayer, Pokemon selection, EV management, personalized trainers, etc. The only thing that it really got wrong was the boss fights being braindead easy. Should've kept the difficulty switch after BW2. Other than that, XY plays better than most of the 2D era.

I feel like the transfer to 3d started a lot of negative trends in the newer games, yeah. I did actually like gen 7, but I'm not gonna pretend it was without its problems. The Hoenn remakes were a mistake, Kalos was underwhelming, and Galar feels like an unfinished mess that had a lot of missed potential. I really feel like HG/SS was the peak of the franchise, Unova was amazing too, it had so much postgame content. I have no idea how gamefreak dropped the ball so hard. What was it about transferring to 3D that made them fuck it all up so bad?

Honestly you are way underestimating how much people hated DPP. The old games aren't flawless.

Nothing has had as much soul as GSC other than maybe B2W2.

Yeah I don't know how they fucked that up. SuMo were like, two short cutscenes away from being genuinely good RPG stories, and they had the perfect setup to make a sequel.
Then USUM came out and it's one step forward, ten steps back.

X and Y's problem was that it appeared that they were holding because they were going for director's cut but they clearly weren't going to be as good as some of the predecessors. Sun and Moon and later basically took everything wrong with X and Y and doubled down on making them the focus.
