Play a Platinum rom hack. It's probably a better experience than most rom hacks, and definitely better than watching poké tubers

Yes, but play it with either animations off or on an emulator that has a 2x speed option. It's the best game in the series but my god is it slow.

I recommend the Classic Version of this. The default makes dumb type and ability changes, among other things. Classic is closer to a regular pokémon game, but with more wild mons and difficult trainers.
