Not that I don't like Monster Rancher, but I think you might be embellishing how variants worked in that series. Pokémon definitely does it better.

I played the ds one, I droped it when my monster died, also it focused in evasion as a main game mechanic, that was fucking stupid.

The 2nd or 3rd game killed my ps2. It failed to read a disk and just kept trying to read it and burned out it's little disk reader thing.
