Actually it was Eternatus. Galarian Corsola are confirmed to be the reanimated spirits of a species of Corsola that were wiped out by a meteorite collision.

Galarian Mareanie don't eat Corsola according to the dex.

The official site says they were killed by a meteorite that landed in the ocean in the ancient past. Eternatus arrived in a meteorite 20,000 years old.

The same event probably killed off the Dreepy line too. Basically, Eternatus did it

They didn't recently die. They're already dead and they died in the ancient past.
