The only challenging rival moments for me have been Hugh's Serperior, Hau's third Island battle, and Hop's Zacian.

Hop's Zacian was actually intimidating but the rest of his team is such a fucking cakewalk that it ruins the whole fight.

I don't even remember what Hau's team was because I never had trouble, same goes for the XY and Black and White rivals.

The only challenges I remember are original Blue after the Elite 4 (though I probably found it difficult only because I was <10) and, surprisingly, Wally from Emerald or even ORAS. He actually ends with a decent team.
