Why do the Pokémon in gen V feel so much different than the previous 4? Is it because no pre-existing moms appeared in BW, so a mental separation between Gen V and the others was created? Is it because the designs are more complex/realistic? I’ve always felt like this gen V had something off about it.

They literally tried something new, that's it. New designers, a new design philosophy. Frankly the real question is why wasn't every generation like this to begin with, rather than Sinnoh being filled with crap like Zubat and Geodude every district.

Though I think Hoenn had the best balance there, and BW2 has the better dex.

The Unovadex was focused on strong concepts behind the mons and doing everything they could with the designs and evolutionary progressions to portray such. It's part of why a lot of Pokemon with parallels to Gen I feel almost like they're pointing a finger at how basic or empty a lot of Kanto's dex was

People shit on Unova for being linear but Sinnoh had almost no identity to me. A lot of it was forests and snow with a big mountain in the middle and Kanto Pokemon everywhere, even though Kanto itself felt more realized just for feeling like an alternate-world Japan.

The only things that really felt different were the bad animations and designs. Everything that was added just felt superficial and really didn't do much in the grand scheme of things. Strip away all the gimmicks and it's just the same shit we got last time.

I loved that for how unrealistic it was. We can have fire Ponies but not a desert near a city? The main issue is how small it feels but that's an engine limitation.

I'm not saying it doesn't. As a matter of fact that's one of the core problems with the franchise as a whole. Look at something like what Colosseum and it's sequel tried to do. All they did was change the way you caught pokemon and changed the main battle type from singles to doubles and it feels so much better

It had a fairly distinct graphical style, the region was far more stylized, the new Pokemon of course, and a unique sound design which is something I only recently became aware of. A lot of the jingles, move sound effects, etc are unique to gen 5, or at least have a unique spin on them in gen 5.

For the majority of players whose first impressions were the BW sprites, you have to take into account the constant animations and the far less dynamic poses of the Pokemon in general (probably a result of needing to be animated), to the point where just about every BW mon's sprite uses their default Sugimori art pose. It just gives off a different general vibe.
There's a reason people started to warm up to BW's designs more when they went 3D.

This is true. The sprites were incredibly boring to look at. Imo nothing in the game was very interesting aesthetically expect for some of the bridges.

Also forgot to mention that the colours in general. The block of BW designs (+ Sinnoh crossgens) are noticeably a little darker to the gens before it and even Gen 6 right after.

I didn't mind that Unova pokemon were the only available pokemon in the region. I did mind how many 3 stage evolutions there were though. It didn't really feel like there were many new Pokemon since a lot were in the same lines.

Hoenn had the perfect focus on new Pokemon while having some old ones.

I liked the idea that every single type had a 3 stage line rep, but it definitely resulted in a few fillers and some types got hit a little hard. Poison's only 3 stage line is Scolipede which despite being a fantastic family and decently viable, doesn't really rep Poison that well. Just another Bug/Poison

I think Unova's biggest problem (like Sinnoh) are all those stupid legendaries. Imagine if we didn't have the genies and/or the swords trio. That's two three-stage lines, or three separate two-stage lines, or one two-stage, one three-stage and a single-stage, etc, etc.

All old Pokemon had the laziest animation-style and that you called "realistic"?
Gen 5/Black and White feels more like a cheap Fanmade Game that a Pokemon Game
