i know it probably makes me a fag but I enjoyed having to say "ok I should use these pokemon for this part of the game"
then again, being able to access the PC at all times will stay forever now so that wouldn't work, since it would only make you go into menus to take out a pokemon, advance a bit and then store it again.
I'm not saying the new thing is bad, btw, just that it wouldn't go well with the old thing

Gen 5 was peak map design, you can literally beat the game without having to use HMs
They are there if you wanna completely explore the routes or open shortcuts, as they should

I played platinum recently and i beat that part just fine without defog.

I'm not sure if PokeMMO got rid of HM areas but i just went through Unova with only ever picking up Surf, Cut, and Fly

And even there i don't really recall any mandatory cut or surf areas
Strength is necessary to open paths in the victory road to make it easier to traverse on a second trip but since you can fly to the league it's not really necessary

Clearly you need some in every game, but Kanto is the least as you can skip fly and flash while using waterfall, cut and surf once. At most I think you need strength more than once

I just wish they assigned certain HM functions to different pokemon by default. Like, you check the pokedex and it says "This pokemon can: Cut Trees and Smash Rocks" or something like that.

I know it's probably not the best idea in practice, but, it'd be a way to put them back into the game atleast.

No, you're being retarded. HMs have never had custom animations except for a few select surfing pokemon. Using your own pokemon isn't more immersive than using rentals or a bike if you can't even see them doing it. It's nothing but more inconvenient. And if they already cut a bunch of pokemon from the dex so that they could animate them eating curry, what the fuck do you think is going to happen if they have to animate every single pokemon that can learn Strength pushing rocks or animate the player riding every single pokemon that can learn Surf.
