Even at its peak, pokemon has only ever been regarded as mediocre. There's a reason why such a massive franchise has had next to no visible influence on gaming while much less popular titles like Metroid actually have.

Those are blatant ripoffs only after the cash they think they can generate from copying Pokémon’s formula. None are critically acclaimed as a series, not even Digimon. Zelda, Mario, Metroid have all significantly influenced not just other developers and titles, but entire genres and playstyles of video games. The term “metroidvania” would not exist without Metroid, and “platformer” as a genre wouldn’t exist without Mario.

Because Nintendo, GameFreak and TPC all force at least one new Pokemon rep every single game while clinging onto Charizard and Lucario as mainstays, which, combined with EVERYONE IS HERE, ended up throwing Mewtwo, Pichu, Squirtle, Ivysaur and Greninja into the mix of Pikachu, Charizard, Jigglypuff, Lucario and Incineroar.

Gave up the TCG when I was 12, the anime in my teens, and there hasn’t been a decent spin-off game in many years. Nor will there be again, because freemium mobile is the route they’re taking without those now.

i refuse to buy swshit but yeah pokemon games have always been average at best. even the better ones like emerald platinum and gale of darkness aren't all that great compared to pretty much every other big budget jrpg series. the only reason people stick with the franchise is the designs and part of why i didn't buy swsh was because the designs were complete fucking dogshit

The only blatant rip off we have is the one everyone else seems to be sucking off because it’s a legit rip off (TemTem). Everything else is pretty much their own entity doing their own thing. Pokemon didn’t even really start the monster catching/raising RPG sub genre SMT did.

Which ones have you played?
Most Pokemon games attempt to invalidate the previous ones by including as much legacy content as possible plus new stuff. Not all of them succeed but you can still see them trying it.
If you're only going to play one Pokemon game, you should make it something like HGSS or B2W2 where they attempted to include absolutely everything enjoyable about the franchise up to that point.

I've got both of those games. I just played AS and didn't feel like I really got to enjoy Hoenn for the likely solid region it was. After Emerald and maybe FRLG for the sake of catching em all up to Gen 4 when I get older, I'll probably close the books on it. I just want to know if there's any reason to play it over Platinum and HGSS.
