This is called "trans-Pacific style" and is specifically meant to appeal to international audiences (and ofc children), there is a conception now that these large brands need to distance themselves from distinctly Japanese design principles and aesthetics in order to ensure the longevity and lasting, broad appeal of the brand. Basically they no longer have faith in the young adult Japanese demo that traditionally consumed anime before now.

Old YGO artstyle by Kazuhiko Takahashi had characters that looked better to every country than these. This is just babying down character models to appeal to literal 5 year olds (as 7 year olds had no problem with original Duel Monsters' themes and style).

Doesn't really have anything to do with SM, this is more of a change for a more animation friendly artstyle and to appeal more to Japanese kids.

I do find it disappointing though. It has none of the sharp-edged YGO aesthetic. I've watched most of YGO, even VRAINS, but I'll probably pass this one up. Ah well, I wasn't the target audience and I don't buy cards anyway.

This is literaly how every boy-oriented toy-selling anime in Japan looks for years, seriously. Also last few YGO! manga series that western people ignore but were pretty liked by Japanese kids (there's a reason why there were like four of them ffs) and the Japanese-only 3DS game that was just tool to teach kids how to play game via simplified speed duels have this aesthetic. It's just that this is how new face of YGO! in Japan looks like, it;s not for us, duh.
I'm more surprised that it took a catastrophe like Arc-V and meh series on budget like Vrains for Konami to realize that making this kind of anime will be a good idea for them, especialy that ZeXal that also was leaning toward this kind of series was second best rated YGO show in Japan.
