I just don't stare at trees man. I don't know what you want me to say? Yes it's horrible, but when you're walking around in the game there is just no moment where I stop to specifically stare at the trees. Specially in the wild area which is "the place where you're focusing on monsters or on the pink beams" area.

I grew up in the 8-bit era where you had to use your imagination. I'm so used to my mind filling in blanks and "retexturing" games to fit my mind's eye, I don't even see the game tree texture any more.

It doesn't need to be perfect, but having textures as low as n64 games is fucking terrible, they have no fucking excuse since let's go didn't have problems such as low res textures and it not only the trees it's visible in a lot of parts of the game. It doesn't make the game unenjoyable but it isn't justified that a 60$ big budget game has such things

Currently playing a 2009 Wii game, Spectrobes Origins, and enjoying it a lot. I'm bothered about the tree because it's nonsensical to put a HD ugly texture when you already have a good one that won't slow down the game because it's the same res.
And yes, trees in Spectrobes Origins look better than this.

It's just a 2D image wrapped around a 3D model at specified points. I've never visited /3/ and even I know some of this stuff.
There is no excuse for why a texture should be this bad unless it's drawn in only a couple of pixels and looped ad infinitum.
Game Freak is relying on brainlets like you having no concept of gamemaking to squeeze by with their technically embarrassing product.

It looks like shit and they could’ve made better trees, way better trees. But my point is that people have lived with shitty game graphics for years, they liked the games because they were fun and interesting. But nowadays a game gets absolutely assblasted for having shitty fucking trees in it. Really? The trees looks like shit? Wow great that really makes the gameplay shit. And the music shit. And the characters shit. And the new pokemon shit. It practically ruins the entire game it’s so shit. Awful, trully awful, like OP says it’s LITERALLY vomit inducing bro. I don’t get how people can let a single texture sour their entire experience with a game.

What do GameFreak apologists actually care about then? What are we allowed to criticize? Seems to me that there is literally nothing left to defend about these games.

After they promised to make the game look better with the Pokemon being cut, I think people are very justified in pointing out that the trees and ground are Nitendo 64 tier. Most people wouldn´t complain about the Dex cut if the game looked really good.

Actual 3D artist here. The problem isn't really the texture itself but everything about it enhances how bad the texture looks. It's literally just a straight cylinder and there is no transition to the flat and green boring ground. Normally trees don't grow perfectly like that unless you have a higly cultivated forest grown for timber and not a natural wilderness. Trees have knobs and dead branches at the bottom and older looking bark the lower you go.
This doesn't have anything to do with stylization. You can make a tree look natural and wild and also cartoony with lower res blotchy textures.
And the entire flat plain around it just makes it stand out really badly. There's no detail to the ground, no small irregularities to the surface, no smaller trees, saplings and bushes around the big tree, no dead brush on the ground or such. Just everything looks rushed and cheap.

I think part of the reason why the ground is so flat and boring is because they don't have Z level movement in the form of jumping. If you can only walk then those small details in your path will be obstructive and annoying because your navigable area has to be flat. If they want to have actual good looking three dimensional level design then they need to put in jumping sooner or later. But chances are they'll have to rewrite the engine or use a new one to allow for Z level movement because I'm sure they're working with decades old tech. And that means no pokemon every couple years and that means less money so they won't do it.
